Education, not medical advice

The content on this site is general patient education. It is not a diagnosis, not a treatment recommendation, and not a substitute for a consultation with a clinician who has examined you. Do not use it to decide that a swelling can wait, and do not use it to decide that a swelling needs emergency care on the strength of a website alone — when in doubt, make the call.

A collection under tension is time-critical

A swelling that is tense, tight and growing over hours, pain that is worsening rather than settling, and skin over a swelling that has turned dusky, shiny, blistered or cold all require immediate assessment. Blood left under pressure can damage the tissue over it and can change the contour of the area permanently.

Bruise size is not the measure

The size of a bruise does not tell you whether a collection has formed. The findings that matter are tension, growth over hours, worsening pain and the state of the skin over the swelling. Nothing on this site should be used to conclude that a large bruise is dangerous, or that a small one is not.

No outcome is guaranteed

No treatment can be guaranteed. How a collection behaves, how the skin over it survives and how the area heals vary between patients, and nothing on this site should be read as a promise about the appearance of the area afterwards.
