Surgical safety and standards · bleeding and collections after surgery · the previously operated and complicated case
Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital and the physician responsible for this site.
His work on this subject begins before the operation and continues through the first days after it. He assesses what makes a patient more likely to bleed: the medication list, the blood pressure, the history and the anatomy of the area being operated on, and he plans the operation accordingly. He is also the clinician who decides whether a swelling is ordinary or is a collection, and that decision is made on tension and on the state of the skin over it rather than on the size of a bruise. Where a collection needs evacuating he does it promptly, because blood left under pressure is the part of this problem that can be permanent.
Clinical focus
Tension, not size, is what decides
A large bruise is common and usually harmless. A swelling that is tense and growing over hours is a different problem, and so is skin over it that has turned dusky, shiny or cold. Those three findings take precedence over everything else on this site, and they are the reason a collection is not left to be looked at at the next appointment.
